1. Last week we looked at some early
internet tools. What other early internet tools were there? Name them and
explain what they did.
2. What other groups are involved in the
governance of the internet other than the Internet society, the Internet
Architecture Board (IAB) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)?
3. What is the link between the Mosaic
and Netscape?
4. Who are O’Reilly Media Inc. and what
is their significance?
5. Where did the wiki concept originate
from?

6. As part of your PDP, Academic skills
development, how do you feel your knowledge of this subject area has improved? What knowledge and skills are you beginning
to develop within the module?

Answers:
1.
Gopher was internet tool to search and distributed documents
whereabouts Veronica was used to explore for
information stored on gopher servers. Another of the early tools no
longer in use is Archie. It was used to search for
information stored on FTP servers. Since the WWW grew in popularity WAIS (Wide
Area Information Servers) was introduce as a system for searching, browsing,
and presenting information. We may not use these tools in today technology but
they were important as they introduce functionality.
2. The Other Institutionalization of
Internet Governance; IETF-Internet Engineering Task Force is a main body which
keeps standardization of Internet Protocols and host of the RFC Editor. Also in
1992 ISOC was created by activists of IETF as a not-for-profit organization
educate and discussing legal, political, social and economical implication in
development of the internet.

The link between the Mozilla and Netscape is from AOL/Netscape Company
where they adopt the Mozilla browser and repackage it to Netscape 6 and later
to Netscape 7 as they use same source of code, but target different users. They are almost identical just the Netscape
6/7 is used as an end-user product whereabouts Mozilla is for the developers.

Wiki concept came from Hawaiian where it means “very quick”
and was created by a community of users in 1990 as a website allowing any user
to add, edit or create any content for anybody to use.

O’Reilly Media Inc. is company established in America by Tim
O’Reilly where through their books, magazine, online services, conferences and
research about technology spreading the knowledge of innovators. The company is
always looking for better methods of creating new ways to connect people who
seek the information.
6. PDP is helping me to be more
aware of the kinds of skills I need within my studies and career aspiration. It
encourages me to reflect on skills which I need to improve but also on the
skills which I feel confident about. Helping me to keep a collection of documents
which records my progress through University encourages me to focus on my
future carrier and will help me to choose my path. This module is a way of
making me to be more aware of importance of technology as the way forward in
career path and importance of its use. The skills within this field is a
necessity which I will need to progress.
